I was wondering how often / when do I need to do safety and emissions test on my car? I live in Ontario, Canada. And what do I need to do in order to renew my plates?

oooh idk about in canada, but where i live/georgia, in order to renew ur license plate, u have to get an emissions test and pass it. They say u should get an emissions test every year!

It doesn’t matter what happens. Just get it tested and see what they say. You’ll have plenty of time to make repairs before the retest.

I have a 99 Oldsmobile Cutlass. The check engine light was on last week and we got it hooked up to the OBD and the it said the code was P1665. We purchased the part and had our mechanic put it in. The check engine light went off and then back on, and finally back off. I went to get it checked yesterday and it got rejected because of the incomplete monitors: EGR, EVAP, and CATALYST. The trouble code from the OBD came up P1665 again too. The guy told me to drive it around a few days and come back. Now my check engine light is on again. What can I do to pass?

Have the engine completely tuned up.

Try another mechanic, if need be.

How long before I can reregister it?

I have a1990 Honda Accord. It doesn’t smoke & runs well. But the windshield is cracked horizontally from the middle of the drivers side to the middle of the passengers. Will I still pass the inspection? Where is a good shop to go to that’s inexpensive?

There is a standard fee for inspection, but the crack in the windshied will not pass.

The original garage’s readings were 9(co emissions) with 3 being the limit. I took it to another garage and it passed with flying colours. Can the readings really be that different or (as I suspect) were the first garage trying to sting me?(they did offer to sell me products to sort the problem out!)

Does make you wonder, doesn’t it?
It’s always possible, of course, that the diagnostic equipment was on the blink - happened to me once, the sniffer showed an alarmingly high CO level, the tester didn’t believe it and cleaned and checked his gear. It was fine when he did it again.
However, the fact that they tried to flog you stuff to sort it out is dubious, any worthwhile garage would suggest the first thing to do is take it for a good hard run (drive it like you stole it) to get it thoroughly warmed up and blow the cobwebs out.

Depends on how many cars got there before you decided to show up.

Might be a few minutes. Might an hour or so.

Even if it’s an hour or two, that’s hardly a long time to have to wait….I’ve waited at a car repair place for 10 hours before. No big deal.

in ca it was 30 to 60 days, no arguments and if you ever been to ca, you understand. here in ok, there is no test.
