Do you have to get an emissions test in Miami, FL?

Posted by admin on November 30th, 2010 and filed under emissions test | 3 Comments »

I live in a place where the State requires a safecty inspection (lights, horn, tires, brake, etc etc) and the county requires an Emissions test ( hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide checks). I plan on moving to Miami ,Florida and wanna know the procedure to register my vehicle there. DO they require any smog or safety inspections down there?

haha, nope, there are no inspections here..welcome to Florida. In Miami you can do all your driving business through the DMV or independent "Tag Agencies" who charge a small fee for their services..when you initially register your vehicle, someone will come out and do a visual walkaround and thats it..then renew your registration every year.

If I remove the insides of my Catalytic Converter will I fail my emissions test?

Posted by admin on November 27th, 2010 and filed under emissions test | 8 Comments »

All the bits in side my catalytic convert are rattling around. Has any one evr taken these out and passed an emission test afterwards?

I know this is probably in contravention of traffic regulation 4 chapter 17.8, sub paragraph dooda. I just want to know if any one has tried it.
A few extra bits of info:

The car is a diesel.
It is in the UK (England)
It was built in 2003.
It has Eghaust Gas recirculation.
I have just spoke to a professional mechanic, and he assures me that removing the insides of the cat will not make the car fail its emissions test. With a diesel, it tests for smoke which apparently is unaffected by the lack of a cat.

As is the case with most automotive questions, the vehicle you have may make a difference. And in the case of emissions questions, where you live as well (many smog regulations are specific to a metro area or county).

Most pre-OBD-II cars are tested with a sniffer. You might conceivably have a chance of passing if that’s the case. I once had a 1967 vehicle that was able to meet specs for 1976 vehicles on a sniffer test at school.

But most OBD-II cars (the vast majority currently on the road) in most jurisdictions, will be subject to a "plug and play" test, and it’s highly unlikely you could pass that. The lack of change in Oxygen levels between the pre- and post-Cat O2 sensors will give you away.

That’s the best answer you’re gonna get, given the limited amount of information you’ve presented.

Vehicle Emissions Testing in CT?

I have an old 1997 Ford Escort LX with maintanence problems that is going on for quite a while. As I really need to get a new car, I want to sell off this old car I have. If I fail the emission test (Which I would get 2 months to fix the car and go again for the test) and get another new car and sell the old car before the next emission and without repairing, would I be responsible for the old car as per law?

Not if you get the buyer to sign an agreement that the car is purchased without warranty of any kind as to merchantabilty - as is, where is. Private sellers are held to a lower standard than licensed dealers.

Will driving my car 1 hour at highway speeds increase the chance of passing the emissions test?

Posted by admin on November 24th, 2010 and filed under emissions test | 3 Comments »

Doing this immediately prior to the emissions test, ofcourse. They also have a bottle of "guaranteed pass" I can buy at CDN tire. Does this help?, or am I just wasting my money and time with both of these tactics?

the hwy. trip will blow out a lot of "build up"from city driving, and warm up every thing. A lot of cars fail from sitting in line waiting for the test. Exhaust build up ,etc. There are" no mechanics in a can" .

Can I pass the emissions test if the check engine light goes off by itself?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2010 and filed under emissions test | 6 Comments »

I’ve had the check engine light on for a while and my emissions test is coming up. The codes say it is because of emissions problems. For some reason the light goes off when the temperatures drop and it stays off for the whole winter. Since it is cooler now, the light went off again by itself. Is there a chance I can pass the emissions test? I have a 98 nissan sentra.
Thanks

Unfortunately when the light comes on it also sets a pre-existing condition code in the computer system. This will become apparent when the smog tech hooks your car up to the test equipment. You may be able to get the code cleared by driving the vehicle for about 30 minutes with the light NOT coming on, then take it to the smog place and DO NOT turn the engine off. Have them pre-test it first. They will then be able to tell you if it will pass.

Is it illegal to smoke in an auto repair shop?

I went to an auto repair shop (Meineke?), and the technician was smoking while checking my brakes. Is that illegal?

If nothing else, it is incredibly stupid. Looks like your mechanic is in line for a Darwin award.

How good are the AAA approved auto repair facilities?

Posted by admin on November 15th, 2010 and filed under auto repair | 1 Comment »

I have to 2-3 AA approved auto repair facilities but I could never find them good. They have suggested me something which was not bad at all. How has been your experience. Please share..

I work for AAA and just want to share some info about its Approved Auto Repair (AAR) program. It was created to address one of the most frequent consumer complaints in America – unsatisfactory automobile repairs. Since the program began in 1975, more than 8,000 automotive repair facilities have been approved in the United States and Canada.

AAA AAR facilities agree to provide customers with: a written estimate not to be exceeded by more than 10% without prior approval, a 12-month/12,000 mile parts and labor warranty, the return of old parts if desired, and the right to have AAA arbitrate any dispute between an AAA member and the facility. Many of them also offer a discount to AAA members.

If you are interested in locating an AAR facility, go to www.AAA.com/repair. If you have had an unsatisfactory experience at a AAA AAR facility you should contact your local AAA club to start the arbitration process.

You can find out more about AAR facilities, what they offer members, the accreditation process and more at http://bit.ly/9vn3A8.
