Where can I find statistics on illegal dumping and trash pollution?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under pollution | 2 Comments »

I need to find numbers and stats on of illegal dumping/ trash/ pollution. I’m making a short film for my high school. I would like to know things about how much trash pollution is collected. Deaths to wildlife because of pollution and other facts. California stats would be great but ANY general stats would help me so much! Thank you.

As laz4059 says, I think you’ll find only scant information. If anyone had current statistics on illegal dumping, then it would need to be turned over to the authorities for enforcement. I say that sort of "tongue in cheek" as the illegal dumpers aren’t filling reports on their activities.

One approach would be to go to EPA’s enforcement information web page:
http://www.epa.gov/oecaerth/data/results/performance/rcra/index.html

You might be able to glean some information there.

Also, think historical - 20/20 vision is always that - crystal clear when looking retrospectively. There should be realms of data on discoveries of illegal dumping, and related activities.

how do you pass the emissions test with headers and cherry bombs on a car?

Posted by admin on January 24th, 2010 and filed under emissions test | 2 Comments »

I was wondering how people put headers and cherry bombs on their street machines but how do you pass the emissions test, Also is it lgal to have a car that loud on the street

Exhaust system do not have any bearing on emission test, unless you remove the installed O2 sensor and/or catalytic converter and have omitted it on the new system.

Why do some auto repair shops have cars in lot?

Posted by admin on January 24th, 2010 and filed under auto repair | 8 Comments »

Some auto repair shops have so many cars in their parking lot. All the cars that are parked there are parking spots customers can use. What is the reason I can see as many as 20 cars parked outside of some shops? Are these cars that still need to be worked on or are they customer cars that the owner doesn’t know if they want to repair the car or not?

A lot of times when you get into an accident and your car gets to a shop if your filing a claim they have to wait for an insurance adjuster which could take about a week they can’t start working on it before that because the insurance company might decide to total it also they have to inspect it and give a quote to the insurance company for how much it would cost to fix it after all of the insurance stuff is taken care of then they can finaly take care of the problem and return your car. If your not filing a claim then they still have to Inspect it and give you a quote to see if you can afford to have it fixed

How can hybrid vehicles contribute in reducing pollution?

Posted by admin on January 24th, 2010 and filed under pollution | 5 Comments »

Hybrid vehicles are produced with the help of electrolysis, and if Ethanol is used in the process, then the electricity generation is still less & hence, these vehicles are taken as helpers in reducing pollution. I need a few examples of hybrid vehicles & how do u think they can further reduce pollution? Please use simple terms, and kindly answer my question.

Hybrid vehicles are a new product of the automobile industry. Such vehicles are becoming more illustrious as they are very efficient and reduce pollution

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Environmental Impacts

Air Quality:
Hybrid vehicles offer a great improvement on the air quality emissions for vehicles that are powered by gasoline. According to The Green Car Club, hybrids reduce health-threatening tailpipe emissions by 90% and evaporative emissions to almost zero. (The Green Car Club) The hybrid vehicle does contribute to green house emissions just at a reduced rate because the fuel that powers the hybrid comes from a petroleum based fuel.

Fuel Production:
The pollution associated with the production of fuel for hybrids is the same as the pollution created in the production of fuel for gasoline vehicles because they both use gasoline. The pollution is somewhat reduced for a hybrid vehicle because the vehicle has greater fuel efficiency. There is considerable pollution related to the production of gasoline. Gasoline contains MTBE which is a known cancer causing agent and can cause birth defects if a pregnant mother is exposed to it. Petroleum extraction and transportation has led to some of the worst ecological disasters that the planet has seen. When the Exxon-Valdez capsized it released millions of gallons of petroleum onto pristine coastlines. The environmental damage was monumental. The destruction of the rainforest is rarely associated with petroleum extraction. However the discovery of vast oil reserves and the subsequent drilling of these reserves in Venezuela and other Latin American countries near the equator, has led to the destruction of tropical rainforests.

Vehicle Production Pollution:
The production process for the hybrid vehicle is very different than the production process of a gasoline vehicle. There are similarities especially in regards to the production of the gasoline powered engine. Thus the production of the gasoline powered engine in the hybrid is similar to that of a gasoline powered vehicle however the addition of the electric engine increases the environmental impact of the production of the hybrid vehicle. The greatest environmental impact comes from the pollution caused by the elaborate battery system that powers the electric engine. The battery pollution is substantial because the creation of the batteries requires destructive mining to produce the batteries and the caustic substances that power the batteries must later be disposed of. The caustic substances that power the batteries are very poisonous and when released into the environment leech into the waterways and poison groundwater.

What can cause me to FAIL emissions test?

Aem V2 intake, catback, maganflow exhuast, headers, skunk 2 intake manifold

can any of those make me fail in california emissions test on my integra gsr?

As long the emission value still below the regulation, u will pass. Check here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_emission_standards

How much less pollution does solar power produce?

Posted by admin on January 22nd, 2010 and filed under pollution | 2 Comments »

I know the solar cell is not producing pollution but making the cell will. I am looking to compile a pollution cost per kilowatt.

the production of electricity from solar is almost zero. The production of the solar equipment is high, and the solar farm requires a very large area. Add that the solar panels need to be cooled with fresh water, so the water needs to be cleaned and circulated.

Does the owner of the car have to be the one present at the emissions testing?

Posted by admin on January 22nd, 2010 and filed under emissions testing | 3 Comments »

In other words, can I do the emissions testing for a car under my dad’s name? We live in Washington state.
I just realized the top and bottom questions have contradicting answers, so please clarify which you’re saying yes or no to. Otherwise, I’ll assume you’re answering the bottom question.

that should be ok.

How can I improve air quality / circulation in my bedroom?

Posted by admin on January 22nd, 2010 and filed under air quality | 3 Comments »

I have a window air conditioner unit (so my window cannot open, meaning I don’t get much fresh air in my room). My room also tends to be a bit on the dusty side. How can I get some good air circulation or better air quality in my room in order to improve my sleep and schoolwork productivity?

Is there filter in the unit? Should be about a 1/4" thick piece of foam stuff. If no, get one and clean it every so often. The average hardware should have some.

While you are looking for the filter, get a spray bottle and mix up a weak vinegar solution. Spray it on the inside coils liberally to rinse the coils clean. You can rinse it with straight water or let it self-rinse while operating.

There may be a vent option on the unit. They will have different ways of labeling it on the unit, but essentially it opens a vent to the outside and sucks a small amount of fresh air into the unit when it operates.

Go outside and hose off the coils with a garden hose. Don’t spray too hard and bend the fins. You can use a liquid cleaner (Windex, 409, etc) if you think it is needed… just rinse it really well afterwards.

What percent/part of air pollution is caused by human activities?

Posted by admin on January 22nd, 2010 and filed under air pollution | 1 Comment »

Air pollution can be natural and anthropogenic. Does anybody know if there is any data for what proportion of air pollution is caused by humans and how much nature contributes to this?

Since the Industrial Revolution in the 1700’s, human activities, such as the burning of oil, coal and gas, and deforestation, have increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. In 2005, global atmospheric concentrations of CO2 were 35% higher than they were before the Industrial Revolution.
