Who would I talk to regarding 100% elimination of pollutants from?

Coal-Fired Plants?
I have an idea that would enable all coal-fired plants to be used, daily and without allowing any greenhouse gasses to escape into the atmosphere.

Australia has billions of tons of coal that they want to use to generate electricity with, but the escaping greenhouse gasses is their primary concern. I don't know if New Zealand has alot of coal to burn, but if they do, then this idea would also work in enabling you to burn all the coal you want to generate as much electricity as you desire and be assured that ZERO pollutants are escaping into the atmosphere.
Anyone interested in answering this most unusual question?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

You can't.

First, CO2 is a nautral byproduct of combustion. Look at the complete combusiton equation for simple gas, CH4+ 2 O2 = CO2 + 2 H2O. CO2 is "the greenhouse gas". The only way to reduce CO2 is to turn off the plant.

Pollutants vary by type
Sulfur Dioxide is reduced by a Scrubber.
CO is reduced by adding extra air.
However, extra air causes more NOx. So there is a tradeoff. NOx can be reduce via a SCR, which uses injected ammonia to mix with the NOx over a catalyst to created water and nitrogen. However, the tradeoff still exists.

The only way to reduce pollution to zero is to not burn energy. However, that warm fuzzy feeling you get not polluting will not keep you warm when you are freezing in the dead of winter.

There are ways to reduce pollution, but they cost money (means higher electric bills) and may reduce it 90-95%, but not 100%.

How long will the COMPASS test take for reading and writing only?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under test only | 2 Comments »

It starts at 8:30 am and i have an appointment at 11:00 am i really really dont want to cancel because it was hard to get in, in the first place

I know it varies from person to person but how long did the COMPASS test take you? I only need to take reading and writing parts.

It's not timed. You can go as fast or as slow as you want. I just took my COMPASS test to day and I finished all 3 sections by 10:28 and I went in at 9. So just go as fast as you want…but make sure you take your time to make sure you answers are correct.

What causes a vehicle to *not* pass an emissions test?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under emissions test | 3 Comments »

Would a need for an oil change? Also my check engine light is on (haven't been able to afford to get in, driving minimally) would that effect the emissions at all? I have a 99 Chevrolet Cavilier, with higher mileage. Thank you in advance!

I am aware it is an exaust test. Here in Washington it's manditory to renew my tabs.

I don't know about Washington but in Ohio for cars 96 and newer they hook the car up to a scan tool so if your check engine light is on or if it does not work you fail. Any reason your check engine light goes on is emission related. It is a federally regulated system so the governmant can keep tabs on emissions. They do this by requiring car manufacturers to monitor emissions through various sensors. When a reading is too high or low it causes the check engine light to come on. There are hundreds of reasons why the PCM will turn the check engine light on. If you need to take a tailpipe emissions test I need to know what gas failed (HC, CO, or NOx) to tell you what may be wrong. If it is the diagnostic test I need to know what codes are stored in the computer to tell you what may be wrong.

How can I get more business in to my auto repair shop?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under auto repair | 6 Comments »

My auto repair business is slow and has been for some time now, we have a good reputation and do high quality work. Unfortunately a lot of my good clients have either died or have moved to far away.
Now we are struggling with money so we don’t have a lot to spend on advertising.
Any ideas on getting new business in the front door without spending a lot, we can usually keep them if we can get them in.

the best thing to do is to give people a GOOD PRICE.

for example, to replace a transmission, instead of charging 1,100 Dollars, charge them 600. A person would be very satisfied and he/she would later recommend you to your friends.

That's how I started. I keep the prices LOW and i have a bunch of customers. In the long run you earn more. =]

What kind of pollution do you hate the most?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under pollution | 20 Comments »

Land pollution
Air pollution
Water pollution
Noise pollution
Visual pollution
Spiritual pollution
Pollution of the mind
-and so on and so forth…

Which of them do you hate the most, and why?

Air pollution is the most dangerous in my opinion. Everyone has to breathe, so everyone is exposed to air pollutants. You avoid the other types of pollutants by: drinking bottled water, noise insulation, don't go swimming, etc.

Also, there appears to be so many air pollutants that can cause harm. For instance, small particulate matter can lodge deep into your lungs to cause respiratory disease, or cancer. Smog is formed when cars or factories emit certain polutants (nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds) in the presence of the sun. Carbon dioxide has been shown to cause global warming. Sulfur dioxide from coal-fired power plants can cause acid rain. Mercury from those same coal-fired power plants deposit into rivers and streams, and poison fish.

You can go on and on and on. It's a fascinating field.

my 1997 mecrury mountaineer failed emissions testing for a insuficient egr flow, what now?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under emissions testing | 2 Comments »

is this why the check engine light won't go off.

It's probably full of carbon deposits. Sometimes you can remove them and clean them out. I had one recently on a '93 Beretta which was too much corroded and rusty, so I had to replace it even though the actuating motor still worked OK. It caused no trouble codes to set, but the car still idled poorly before I changed it.

Where can I find current, reliable data on air quality of various cities?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under air quality | 2 Comments »

I am having difficulty finding current, reliable data on air quality of different cities. I am especially interested in Madison WI, Norman Oklahoma, Columbia MO, Wheaton IL, and the twin cities in MN.

As both my son and I have allergies and I have mild breathing difficulties and sensitivities when in polluted air, this information would be invaluable to me as we consider where to relocate.

If you could direct me to an online source where I could get this information, I would be eternally thankful!

http://airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.fcsummary&sortby=todayfc&order=desc&stateid=0

http://epa.gov/air/basic.html

I found the above two links helpful. Hope they help you out some too. I lived in Wheaton, IL for 6 years and LOVED it there. However, I’m guessing some of the pollution from Chicago spills over into Wheaton. But, Wheaton’s a beautiful suburb–if you need any more information about it, please feel free to contact me. Good luck!

What can people do to decrease air pollution?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under air pollution | 1 Comment »

Well i need ideas for this.. i basically wrote a essay explaining how harmful air pollution is and what it does to humans and our environment. So my question is what can people do to decrease air pollution?

Step 1:
Consider alternative means of transportation, such as walking or bicyling. Or, try carpooling or telecommuting.
Step 2:
If you must drive your car, try to do all your errands at one time, one after the other.
Step 3:
Refuel your car in the evening instead of during the day, when heat allows emissions in the air and from gas to form ground-level ozone.
Step 4:
Avoid spilling gas.
Step 5:
Keep your car in good condition.
Step 6:
Look for merchants who provide delivery services to help reduce car use.
Step 7:
Campaign to have your company or office provide a cafeteria or catering service (if it doesn't already have one) so that you don't have to drive from the workplace to eat lunch.
Step 8:
Avoid purchasing products that come in aerosol spary cans; try solid, gel and liquid forms instead.
Step 9:
Use gas-powered lawn tools as little as possible.
Step 10:
Use water-based paints instead of oil and varnishes.
Step 11:
Avoid using lighter fluid when barbecuing. Instead, use an electric or chimney briquette starter.

Where to find Ida Red apples on Long Island, NY?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under red apple falls | 1 Comment »

Well my sister is a freshman at SUNY Oswego (upstate) and we went up there about a month ago for family/friends weekend. While there, we went apple picking with her church club. Well we brought home a few bushels and we put them in fridge, so they lasted. Anyways, we brought home the Ida Reds, and fell in love with them, as they were really sweet, but still a bit tart, they were really good. And when my dad made apple pie for Thanksgiving, he swears it came out better than when my grandmother used to make the pie with the Cortlands. He’s convinced its the apples, lmaooo…..

So my question is where can we buy this variety on Long Island??? We’ve never heard of this apple beforehand, and don’t think I’ve seen them in the stores…. It is possible they sold them in the stores by us before we went upstate, so we weren’t paying attention for them, and by the time we came home and started looking for them, they were already out of season, but just curious, if you can buy them w/o going back upstate???? Thankssss
